Miss Helen Iggo, Miss Canterbury 1964, who also placed second in the Miss New Zealand contest, is pictured here at the Crown Lynn factory being presented with a ceramic gourd before she flies off to California to take place in the Miss International beauty pageant.
The gourd travelled with Iggo and was used as part of a ‘special ceremony at which girls from each country represented will pour water brought from their homeland into the pool of international friendship.’*
The gourd was filled with ‘Lake Taupo water, ice cold and 99.7 percent pure.’**
Iggo made it into the semi-finals in California. Gemma Cruz from the Phillipines was crowned the winner of the pageant.
The ceramic gourd made by Crown Lynn, was hand thrown by Daniel Steenstra, and decorated by Head of Design David Jenkins. The coffee set was made to be presented to the mayor of Long Beach, California.
